Androgens and Adaptogens

Much of the attention about Pine Pollen is focused on its potent bio-available androgen phyto-hormones. These phyto-hormones, unlike bio-identical hormones and synthetic hormones like prescription steroids are safe, and do not interfere with the normal negative feedback mechanism of hormone production in the body. As we mentioned above, Pine Pollen contains phyto-chemicals similar to the male sex hormones (Androstenedione, Testosterone, Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and Androsterone).*

The androgenic constituents in Pine Pollen explain its potential powerful effects in building and maintaining healthy bone and muscle mass, maintaining a healthy and high metabolism, promoting strong immune function, skin health and elasticity, libido (a sign of a healthy endocrine system), breast health in both women and men and testicular and prostate health in men.* Part of the proposed beneficial action for breast and testicular and prostate health comes also from Pine Pollen's possible ability to directly promote detoxification of environmental pollutants (such xeno-estrogens (harmful estrogen like hormones from the environment, like plastics, industrial pollutants, and pollutants from industrial agriculture)) and through increasing the rate of GTS (more on this later). Even with these powerful effects from this single component, we have to stress that Pine Pollen is a synergistic collection of over 200+ active components, and the beneficial effects far surpass its androgenic hormones.*

Today, Stephan Buhner, in his book The Natural Testosterone Plan, has helped to introduce Pine Pollen to the US population. He has done so because the of the pattern of declining androgen levels in men and women, and the corresponding increase in certain diseases. For instance, Buhner points out that there has been a directly corresponding rate over the past 50 years of prostate cancer to the use of certain estrogen containing agricultural chemicals. RAW Forest Foods has also been highly influential in increasing awareness and opening the dialog around these issues, as RAW Forest Foods was the first company in the US to offer Pine Pollen.

Analysis has shown Pine Pollen to contain the following androgenic phyto-sterols

  • Androstenedione;
  • Androsterone
  • DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone);
  • Testosterone.

Additionally, Pine Pollen contains adaptogenic compounds, which may have a regulatory effect on the endocrine system. Including:

  • Gibberellins;
  • Brassinosteroids.

High Estrogen and Estrogen Dominance

In the forest, the pine tree is the first to reawaken, and as it does so the pine tree begins to fruit its catkins and spread its pollen. At this time the forest is still largely asleep, but the presence of the pollen falling on the plants and the forest floor usher in the transformation that brings Spring. The entire rebirth of the forest is due, single handed, to the power of that first pollinating tree, the pine tree. And while RAW Pine Pollen brings over 200+ active and identifiable healing constituents, its brings along a power of transformation which we have all experienced in nature, but very few of us have ever experience on a personal health level. For humans, we can reawaken our own Spring—physically, mentally, and spiritually, by supplementing our diet with Pine Pollen.*

When looking at these 200+ active constituents in Pine Pollen, four phyto-hormones stand out for potential regenerative capabilities. These are Androstenedione, Testosterone, Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), and Androsterone. If you know your anatomy, you will know that those four hormones are the androgens, the male sex hormones. Pine pollen is able to potentiate, or kick-start, Spring because it coats the forest with a thick layer of nutrients, and these specific hormones may help awaken and regenerate, giving a much needed boost to everything that comes in contact with it.*

In human physiology, a markers in determining biological age are the levels of these sex hormones—in both men and women. Higher levels of androgen hormones tend to indicate a lower physiological (biological) age. Unfortunately, possibly because of poor diet and environmental pollution, levels of male sex hormones in women and men are historically low.*

Effects of Low Levels of Androgen Hormones

  • Increased levels of "bad" cholesterol;
  • Increased rate of aging/premature aging;
  • Diabetes and blood sugar irregularities;
  • Osteoporosis and Catabolism, low bone density and loss of muscle;
  • Loss of aerobic energy capacity, difficultly in getting and staying in shape;
  • Weight gain in men and women, increase of estrogen in men— potentially leading to prostate disorders;
  • In Women, possibly linked to loss of bone mass and vitality;
  • Both sexes: sexual malfunction and infertility in men.*

Interestingly, many of the effects of low androgens are disorders which are normally explained away as inevitable due to old-age. This is interesting for a few reasons. One, over the past 100 years, testosterone levels have been declining in men, and over that time, life expectancy has also gone down. Men used to have a longer life span than women and now their life span is a decade shorter.* Two, it signifies that many complaints of old age might potentially be avoidable (or at least postponed), and we see a causative factor—the levels of these hormones—as why some people age without these complaints and others are burdened with every single one of them.* Thirdly, it is interesting because the symptoms of low androgen are also the same conditions which Pine Pollen has been traditionally prescribed for for literally thousands of years in China.*

In both Classical and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Pine Pollen is has been used to assist or aid:

  • Low testosterone in men;
  • Sperm count (male fertility);
  • Prostate disorders;
  • Metabolism;
  • Muscle tone and bone density;
  • Sexual dysfunction due to low androgen levels;
  • Weight management and/or weight loss;
  • Immune system health;
  • Acne;
  • Heart disease.*

Pine Pollen for the Treatment of Migraine and Stress/Cluster Headaches

Some of the benefits of Pine Pollen still remain to be a mystery, and as the use of Pine Pollen in the US grows, more and more are beginning to surface. One of these worth mentioning separately from the others are the individual instances of using Pine Pollen as a treatment for aiding comfort from migraine and stress-induced headaches.* For some with migraines, using just a pinch of the Pollen directly on the tongue helps relieve the most debilitating headaches (as reported by our customers).*

Learning More: Scientific and Medical Research

The vast majority of scientific and clinical research done into Pine Pollen has been done in other languages and is largely inaccessible to English speakers. Acknowledging the difficultly that these inaccessible resources pose, we have contracted with native Chinese speakers to translate these articles for our use and use by our customers.

At RAW Forest Foods, we pride ourselves in providing quality, original information to our customers. We are the original source of much of the information currently available on the Internet in reference to Pine Pollen. Keeping with, and enforcing, that tradition, we have been working with a native Chinese speaker and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) expert to translate both historical and ancients citations of Pine Pollen and also translating select medical and scientific research papers.

The popularity of Pine Pollen in English speaking countries is still in its infancy, and it is largely still perceived as fringe, alternative medicine—that is, there is little to no scientific research done on it that is available in English. But this does not mean that the scientific literature does not exist. It does. Scientific research into its effectiveness as a medicinal herb begun in the 1980’s, and focuses on three species: Pinus massoniana , Pinus Tabulaeformis, and Pinus Yunnanensis.

Working with our Chinese colleague, we have translated a few selected texts into English to highlight the promising scientific research that exists into Pine Pollen. These publications are available in Chinese, and their translations are available here to you:
