Tradition, Lineage, and Contemporary Relevance
The term adaptogen is relatively new—introduced in 1947 by Russian pharmacologist Nikolai Lazarev—but the principles it describes are as old as medicine itself.
In the Shènnóng Běn Cǎo Jīng, one of the earliest Chinese materia medica texts (circa 200 CE), herbs were categorized by their qualities. Those classified as Shàng Pǐn—Superior Herbs—were said to strengthen the body, support longevity, and cause no harm even with long-term use. These herbs were used not for curing disease, but for cultivating health and preserving vitality.
Among them were names still in use today:
- Huáng Qì (Astragalus membranaceus)
- Rén Shèn (Panax ginseng)
- Ròu Cōng Róng (Cistanche spp.)
- Sōng Huā Fěn (Pine Pollen)
These herbs—and others like them—laid the foundation for what we now understand as adaptogens: botanicals that help the body maintain equilibrium under stress.
In Ayurveda, a parallel system developed around the concept of Rasāyana—a class of rejuvenative therapies and herbs used to rebuild strength, restore tissues, and preserve life force. Here we see the earliest documented use of Ashwagandha and Shilajit, both now recognized globally for their restorative qualities.
Modern Science, Classical Criteria
In the 1960s, Dr. Israel Brekhman expanded on Lazarev’s work, establishing three core characteristics of an adaptogen:
- Non-toxic and suitable for long-term use
- Enhances resistance to a broad range of physical, chemical, and biological stressors
- Helps normalize physiological function—whether overactive or underactive
These closely mirror the characteristics of Shàng Pǐn herbs and Rasāyana formulations. The knowledge was never lost—it simply required new language.
Today, in an environment marked by chronic stress, overstimulation, and endocrine disruption, these herbs remain highly relevant. They help preserve Yuán Qì—the deep reserves we are born with—and offer foundational support for navigating the physical and emotional strain of modern life.
Key Traditional Adaptogenic and Tonic Herbs

How We Work with Adaptogens at RAW Forest Foods
Formulation is never random. In every product, we look to support the foundational substances—Jìng, Qì, and Shèn—with herbs that build rather than deplete, that regulate without overstimulation. Our adaptogenic formulas are crafted to reflect the original purpose of these plants: restoration, longevity, and sustainable resilience.
The formulas you see above are the result of this perspective—refined, time-tested, and built not only to support health today, but to help safeguard it in the years to come.
