The Easy Way to Boost Sperm Health
According to researchers from the URV’s Human Nutrition Unit, doing something as simple as eating a handful of nuts each day can greatly increase sperm quality. The researchers came to this conclusion following a 2019 study which revealed a boost in sperm health among males who introduced selected nuts into their standard western diets.
The 2019 study was conducted on 83 men who ate a typical western diet low in fruits and vegetables and high in animal fats. The individuals were split into two groups. One group carried on eating their ordinary diet for 14 weeks, while the other group ate 60g of walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds every day, in addition to their normal diet. When the 14 weeks were over, each participant filled out an internationally validated questionnaire (known as the IIEF-15) which covered 15 questions about sexual function.
According to the completed questionnaires, introducing walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds into the rather unhealthy western diet improved the quality of orgasms and the level of sexual desire in the male participants.
Sperm Health and Jing
To us at RAW Forest Foods, these findings aren’t surprising at all — since nuts are one of the best foods for building jing. In Chinese medicine, Jing is the material basis for the physical body. In men, the greatest strain the body places on its jing levels is semen production. Because of this, it stands to reason that if you increase your daily intake of nuts, you’ll strengthen your jing and, in turn, will increase sperm count and volume.
Why is Sperm Quality Important?
If you’re trying to conceive naturally, having good quality sperm and a healthy sperm count are very important. Although it technically only takes one egg and one sperm to get pregnant, the more healthy sperm there are present, the greater your chances of conception.
Even if you’re not trying for a baby, sperm count is a way to discern overall health in men. A 2018 study demonstrated that men with a low sperm count were more inclined to have greater levels of body fat and higher blood pressure than men with higher sperm counts. They were also subject to higher levels of metabolic syndrome, as well as developing heart disease and diabetes.
What Defines Strong Sperm Health?
Now you know why having healthy sperm is important for all men, let’s look at what defines it. There are three main things which characterize strong sperm health: quantity, movement and shape.
Approximately 15 million sperm for every milliliter of semen is a healthy sperm count. The higher the sperm count, the more likely one will make it to the egg for a successful conception.
At least 40% of your sperm need to be strong swimmers so they can reach the egg for you to be fertile.
Healthy sperm have long, strong tails and round heads which improve their swimming abilities.

While exercising on a regular basis, stopping smoking and reducing your stress levels can all have fantastic effects on sperm health, they can be challenging to incorporate into your life. We’re not saying it’s a quick fix, but if you’re looking for an easier way to improve your sperm health, stock on up walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds and grab a handful of them everyday.
