Tongkat Ali 200:1 Extract
Pure Malaysian Tongkat Ali Extract
Mature Eurycoma longifolia Roots in Capsules
Pure Malaysian Tongkat Ali, known botanically as Eurycoma longifolia, is one of the most interesting pro-androgenic herbs that we know of. However, with the plant's recent popularity comes a fair amount of misunderstanding and misinformation. For starters, there are several different plants that are commonly referred to as Tongkat Ali, but only the yellow Eurycoma longifolia is true Malaysian Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia), the plant studied within the research literature (learn more about the three plants that are known as Tongkat Ali below).
Traditionally, Tongkat Ali has been used in Indonesia as an aphrodisiac and tonic herb, as well as a folk medicine for several tropical diseases. Current research into Tongkat Ali both supports many of the traditional ethnobotanical uses of the plant and expands upon them, ultimately painting a picture of an herb with greater therapeutic potential than previously thought and an herb more in-line with other high-grade adaptogens, tonics, and pro-androgenic.
Much of the contemporary, clinical research into Tongkat Ali has focused on a relationship between the plant and the body's own (endogenous) production of androgenic hormones (such as testosterone). Other research has investigated the plant for increasing mounting behavior in animal models (libido), and possible anti-cancer and anti-tumor properties (through the present chemical quassinoids).
Furthermore, research into Tongkat Ali has shown beneficial actions against prostate cancer cells, making it potentially even more relevant for male reproductive health.
In its RAW state, Tongkat Ali is poorly absorbed by the body, which necessitates the use of a potent Tongkat Ali Extract. We use a dual-stage extraction process in producing our 200:1 (200 times concentration) extract, ensuring high, digestible levels of the bio-active compounds present in the herb.
As stated, Tongkat Ali is an important pro-androgenic, tonic herb.

An Overview of the Plant and its Potential
Eurycoma longifolia is a flowering plant native to Indonesia (where it is known as Pasak Bumi), Malaysia (where the popular name Tongkat Ali comes from), and Thailand, Vietnam (known as Cay Ba Bihn), and Laos. The Tongkat Ali plant is a medium-sized, slender tree from the botanical Simaraubaceae family. The mature Tongkat Ali plant can reach a height of ten meters (approximately 33 feet), and it is often un-branched with reddish brown petioles (the stalk attaching the leaf blade to the stem). The plant is largely found as an under-story growth of lowland forests in Peninsula Malaysia and other Southeast Asian regions. This is a tropical plant, with a deep geographic, ethnobotanical history.
As a plant native to the tropics, the traditional use of Tongkat Ali has often referenced its locality, including its traditional use as an antimalarial, antipyretic (lowering a fever), and as an antimicrobial. Additionally, there is a strong traditional use of Tongkat Ali as an aphrodisiac, and still other references to the traditional use of it as an anti-diabetic (blood sugar regulating) herb. Many of the traditional uses of Tongkat Ali have been investigated through contemporary scientific research, with specific emphasis placed on the androgenic, anti-malaria, and anti-cancer attributes made to Tongkat Ali.
Within its historical, traditional use, the root of the plant was boiled and reduced into a decoction and drank, largely as a tonic to help promote libido and energy. In its raw and unextracted state, Eurycoma longifolia is poorly metabolized, and strong extracts must be used to benefit from it. RAW Forest Foods offers Tongkat Ali as a 200:1 double extract, producing an extremely concentrated bio-available Tongkat Ali Extract.
Like all good things, Tongkat Ali takes time to work. Research done into its effects suggest that six weeks of constant (daily) use is needed to gain any possible, positive benefits from the herb.* While the plant has much to offer, it demands of us the time needed to manifest those offerings.
The Three Colors (Plants) Known as Tongkat Ali
The name Tongkat Ali is a common name, meaning that it is what a plant is commonly referred to as, but it is not the plant’s scientific, botanical name. Sometimes the common name of a plant will be synonymous with a single plant (such as the dandelion plant, Taraxacum officinale); however, other times a common name may reference several different plants that share a common usage within a folk tradition of herbal medicine, but share no actual similarities.
Tongkat Ali is a prime example of a common name referencing several different plants—and not just different varieties or species of the same genus, but completely different plants. The name Tongkat Ali is the Malaysian name for a group of plants that have a long tradition of similar, interchangeable use in South East Asia.
As Tongkat Ali becomes increasingly used outside of its native home, three different versions (three plants) of Tongkat Ali seem to have become popularized:
Also known as Tongkat Ali Kuning, Pasak Bumi Kuning, and Yellow Tongkat Ali. The Latin name for this plant is Eurycoma longifolia. This is the Tongkat Ali studied in the scientific literature, and the only Tongkat Ali we carry at RAW Forest Foods.
Tongkat Ali Hitam
Also known as Black Tongkat Ali. The Latin botanical name of the plant is unsubstantiated, purported to be Polyalthia bullata. We do not know of any scientific research done on the therapeutic or medicinal properties of this plant.
Tongkat Ali Merah
Also known as Red Tongkat Ali. Again, as with Black Tongkat Ali, the Latin botanical name is unsubstantiated, but it is purported to be Jackia ornata, Jackiopsis ornate, and Stema tuberosa. Again, just as with Black Tongkat Ali, we have not seen any scientific research into this type of Tongkat Ali.
Looking at the scientific literature to validate the uses of Tongkat Ali and the plants behind the name, one pattern quickly emerges: The research has focused on Eurycoma longifolia and that within the research the name Tongkat Ali references only Eurycoma longifolia (and vice-versa), and that information supporting the plants purported to be Black Tongkat Ali/Tongkat Ali Hitam and Red Tongkat Ali/Tongkat Ali Merah is—at best—sparse and unreliable.
In short, the scientific research into the medicinal properties and therapeutic potential of Tongkat Ali has been done almost exclusively on Eurycoma longifolia. While other varieties and other plants may have used outside of the scientific literature, RAW Forest Foods offers only Eurycoma longifolia.
Today, amply research done into Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) sheds light on the long-standing traditional uses of the plant, and the research has revealed potential uses of Tongkat Ali outside the realm of its ethnobotanical history. As time passes, and an increasing amount of research is done into Tongkat Ali, the plant will continue to reveal itself. The traditional uses of Tongkat Ali, as well as the scientific research into it, are provided here solely for informational use, and the information (nor the product) is intended to suggest or to provide medical advice, self-diagnosis, or self-treatment.
Tongkat Ali contains 65 isolated, identified compounds, which include:
- Beta-carboline alkaloids.
- Quassinoids (present in pasakbumin-B).
Several therapeutic quassinoid compounds have been isolated from Eurycoma longifolia. These quassinoids are known to possess a myriad of positive actions in the body. Research into the quassinoids has investigated their possible anti-tumor, antiviral, antifeedant (adversely affecting insects or other animals that eat them), antiamoebic, and anti-inflammatory properties.
Notable Studies into the Therapeutic Potential of Tongkat Ali Extract:
- The use of Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) as a safe alternative to testosterone replacement therapy (TRT);
- Increased copulatory activity of sexually sluggish and impotent male rats;
- Increased lean muscle (anabolic) effects in men and women;
- Improved reproductive health as seen in male/female animal models;
- Increased sperm production due to activation of the HPA axis (in animal models);
- Investigation into cell death of several cancers, including breast, cervical, prostate, and lung cancer.*
The Need for a Powerful Androgenic Herb
On average, as men age testosterone and other androgen hormone production declines.* This is known as testosterone deficiency syndrome (TDS) and usually accompanies the following symptoms: low libido, increased fat mass, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, and/or osteoporosis.* Historically, a gradual decline begins between 30 to 40 years of age, where the levels of serum testosterone drop with a yearly rate between 0.4% and 2.6% for total testosterone and 0.87% and 1.7% for free testosterone.*
The use of androgenic, tonic and adaptogenic herbs within this context is not to artificially elevate hormones levels to those that are far beyond natural (supraphysiological) levels, but it is to create a healthier, more vital image of aging and to stave off many of the diseases which are seen as being inexorably tied to aging and low testosterone. Comparatively to the West, as we look around the world we find populations that do not age as we do here: Many remain mobile, productive, strong, vital, and healthy well into very old age. Sexuality remains and they are active, contributing members of the family and community. By many metrics, these populations seem not to age at the same comparative rate.
Tongkat Ali is not about hyper-masculinity, it is about aging well and living a healthy, long, fulfilled life.
Endocrine Health, Hormones, and the HPA Axis
The Hypothalamus / Pituitary / Adrenal + Testes Axis
The method of action (MOA) as understood in Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia) makes it a unique androgenic herb. Tongkat Ali appears to work specifically on the Hypothalamus / Pituitary / Adrenal + Testes Axis (HPA/T Axis), the pathway of the endocrine system that is responsible for normal male sex hormone regulation and production.* In this pathway, signaling hormones are passed from the hypothalamus to the pituitary gland, and then to the adrenal and testes where testosterone and other androgen hormone production occurs. Of this system, the hypothalamus ultimately regulates how much testosterone is produced.
Tongkat Ali is believed to signal the hypothalamus to release more of a hormone called Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which signals to the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland to release more luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).* These two hormones act on the testes to both increase sperm production and quality and increase testosterone production.
