Clinical Grade 10:1 Concentrated Extracts

Elephant Mountain Ginseng Formula was developed to offer our customers a balanced adaptogen formula which celebrates the positive attributes of Chinese, American, and Tienchi Ginseng (Panax ginseng, Panax quinquefolius, and Panax notoginseng) and other adaptogenic herbs which colloquially have been referred to as ginseng but which are not in fact part of the botanical Ginseng family.

This formula is for those desiring deep adaptogenic rejuvenation and not merely empty stimulation. This formula is intended to improve sleep, promote blood vitality, strengthen immunity, boost energy, and rejuvenate from an over-stressed life.

From the Package

From our Forest Formulations collection, our Elephant Mountain Ginseng Formula has been developed to energize though deep adaptogenic restoration, not merely empty stimulation.* It has been prepared with clinical grade 10:1 extracts of our favorite complementary adaptogenic herbs, together in a proprietary formula, including American Ginseng, Chinese Ginseng, Ashwagandha, and Eleuthero.*

A Formula, not a Blend

Instead of simply a combination or a blend of similar sounding herbs, our Elephant Mountain Ginseng Formula is an expert formula developed by our master formulator. This formula embodies a fundamental knowledge of how the herbs work and interact with one another and how they come together to affect the body.

When working with adaptogens, many focus on their stimulatory nature. While this can provide an immediate increase in energy it may ultimately leave the body more drained and more fatigued. This is using adaptogens within the Western mindset--focused on stimulation with a "more-is-better" mentality.

Adaptogens are a class of powerful herbs which can assist the body in profound ways: Reducing stress, improving sleep, providing clear and focused energy, promotion of youthful longevity, as well as a host of other benefits. However, to gain these benefits, these herbs must be combined--formulated--correctly.

This is why we developed our Elephant Mountain Ginseng Formula for our customers.

The Chinese Medical Perspective

While many people seek out adaptogens because of their stimulating properties, these adaptogens often ultimately leave people feeling just as worn out and depleted (if not more so) as when they started using them. This is because the majority of popular adaptogenic herbs are warm-to-hot in nature. Because most are already combating a hot constitution, these herbs exacerbate the issue and make matters worse. What is needed is a cooling, centering formula of adaptogens which nourish from the inside out, not merely supplementing with stimulating herbs.

Seeking to offer our customers a unique, deeply nourishing adaptogenic formula, we have created our Elephant Mountain Ginseng Formula to accomplish just this. This formula is designed to simultaneously address the feelings and symptoms of overwork and stress (the heat in the body) while also offering a deep well of replenishment. Elephant Mountain Ginseng formula contains herbs which are adaptogens and balance heat, dampness, and offer the cooling Yin that so many of us need today. This is not a stimulating formula but will offer a centered, focused energy that is balanced by a cool relaxation.

Ginseng, as part of the Latin binomial botanical naming system, refers to those plants part of the Panax genus, such as Panax ginseng (Chinese Ginseng), Panax quinquefolius (American Ginseng), and Panax notoginseng (Tienchi Ginseng), of which this formula includes all three. However, people have colloquially referred to some of the herbs contains within this formula as ginseng, such as Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus) or Indian Ginseng (Withania somnifera), so as to not mislead any customers, we try and be as clear as possible as to what is--and what is not--ginseng.

The Herbs and their Benefits

American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius)

One of the few true ginseng species, American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) offers unique tonifying properties. While American Ginseng is deeply nourishing to the Yin and Qi, it is not overly stimulating as other adaptogens can be and it does not contribute to excess heat in the body. This makes American Ginseng a particularly important herbal medicine in a culture that is overworked and inflamed, such as ours is.

American Ginseng is one of the few ginsengs which are part of the Panax genus and it offers powerful and unique tonifying properties. In Chinese, American Ginseng is known as Xi Yang Shen, which translates to the "Root from the Western Seas." American Ginseng has a long tradition of use by the native people of North America, early European herbalists in North America, and at one point was the most valuable commodity exported out of America.

Within Chinese Medicine, American Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius) is used to:

  • Benefit (tonify) the Qi;
  • Generate Fluids and nourish the Yin;
  • Nurture the Lung Yin.

Similar to other well-known adaptogens, American Ginseng has undergone extensive scientific research, where it has been studied for its ability to:

  • Contains important antioxidants;
  • Anti-inflammatory properties;
  • Increased immune system response;
  • Central nervous system benefits (adaptogenic qualities);
  • Increased cardiovascular health;
  • Blood sugar regulation and antidiabetic effect;
  • Anticancer abilities.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha is a traditional Ayurvedic Rasayana. Rasayana is a Sanskrit word which translates to (āyana) of essence (rasa) and is used here to describe the class of herbs used for their tonifying and longevity benefits.

In the West, Ashwagandha is commonly referred to as "Indian Ginseng" because of its importance in Ayurveda as a potent adaptogen, but it is not a Ginseng and it is not part of the Ginseng family of plants.

Ashwagandha is particularly revered for its ability to simultaneously relax and invigorate, for its anti-anxiety effects, and its libido increasing effects. Ashwagandha is a favorite herb of the nootropic communities (those focused on safe supplements to increase cognition) for its energy promoting and anxiety decreasing properties.

Traditionally, Ashwagandha was used in India for its strengthening effect on the immune system, particularly in recovering from debilitating illness, and as a general strengthening tonic.

Modern research into Ashwagandha has focused on Ashwagandha for:

  • Immune system protection;
  • Anti-cancer abilities;
  • Combat the effects of stress;
  • Improvements in learning, memory, and reaction time;
  • Reduces anxiety and depression without causing drowsiness;
  • Stabilizes blood sugar (anti-diabetic);
  • Lowers cholesterol;
  • Increase brain cell health;
  • Anti-malarial properties;
  • Anti-inflammatory benefits.

Chinese Ginseng (Panax ginseng)

Chinese Ginseng (Panax ginseng) is considered to be the original ginseng, for which other herbs have been named and identified within the Ginseng classification. In Chinese Medicine, it is known as Ren Shen, which translates to "Man Root." Chinese Ginseng was first mentioned in the Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica (Shennong Bencao Jing), written between 300BC and 200AB but attributed to oral traditions dating back to around 2800BC. Chinese ginseng is a prime example of an adaptogenic herb is which is also a true Ginseng.

Chinese Ginseng is both one of the most commonly used and most commonly researched herbs, and has enjoyed ample success in documented clinical research studies. Within Chinese Medicine, Panax ginseng is used to:

  • Powerfully tonify the original Qi;
  • Tonify the Lung and benefit the Qi;
  • Strengthen the Spleen and tonify the Stomach;
  • Benefits Yin and generates Fluids;
  • Benefits the Heart Qi and calms the Spirit.

Modern research into Chinese Ginseng (Panax ginseng) has studied its following benefits:

  • Increased mood;
  • Increased immunity;
  • Increased cognition;
  • Strengthening erections;
  • Increased testosterone production;
  • Physical and exercise benefits.

Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae)

Dan Shen falls within the unique and important class of herbs that bare the name "Shen," which includes Chinese Ginseng (Ren Shen), Codonopsis (Dang Shen), and American Ginseng (Xi Yang Shen). The name Shen denotes a class of herbs of special importance and interest, and though it is mentioned alongside Chinese and American Ginseng, Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae) is part of a different botanical family.

Dan Shen is a classically important Chinese herb and was first referenced in the Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica (Shennong Bencao Jing), along with Chinese (Panax) Ginseng.

Within Chinese Medicine, Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae) is used to:

  • Invigorate the Blood and break up Congealed Blood;
  • Clears Heat and soothes irritability.

The ability for Dan Shen to clear Heat makes it an important contribution to our Elephant Mountain Ginseng Formula, as many adaptogens can contribute to Heat in the body (synonymous with inflammation), which can further exacerbate feelings of low energy, depletion, overwork, and early aging.

Today, Dan Shen is used widely for its systematic benefits to the body, including use for fat loss, bodybuilding, acne, anxiety, cardiovascular benefits, cancer, cholesterol, depression, diabetes, glaucoma, sleeping problems, fertility, arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation, fibroid, and other uses.

Scientific research into Dan Shen has focused on its use to:

  • Increased cardiovascular health, including expanding the coronary artery and increases coronary blood flow;
  • Improved blood flow and microcirculation;
  • Dilates blood vessels and lowers blood pressure;
  • Improved blood composition (blood viscosity, platelets, resists thrombosis);
  • Increased red blood cell health;
  • Liver protection and promotes the regeneration of liver cells;
  • Promotes healing of broken bones and skin incisions;
  • Protects gastric mucosa and fights against the ulcer (stomach health);
  • Calms the central nervous system (CNS);
  • Improved kidney function;
  • Anti-inflammation and anti-allergy.

Dang Shen (Codonopsis pilosula)

Dan Shen (Codonopsis pilosula) is a Qi tonifying herb part of the group of herbs within the Shen distinction (as mentioned above) but like Dan Shen, Dang Shen does not belong to the Ginseng classification. Unlike many adaptogens, Dang Shen does not contribute to heat in the body, making it an important inclusion in our Elephant Mountain Ginseng Formula and an important herb for use with those already experiencing the effects of an overactive, overworked, overstressed life.

Within Chinese Medicine, Dan Shen (Codonopsis pilosula) is used primarily to:

  • Tonify the Middle Burner and benefit the Qi, relieving fatigue, tired limbs lack appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, or any chronic illness with Deficient Spleen Qi
  • Tonify the Lungs
  • Strengthens the Qi and nourishes the Fluids.

Some of the modern clinical and pharmacological research into Dang Shen has targeted the following uses:

  • Hematologic effect: Increased red blood cell count and hemoglobin;
  • Increased gastrointestinal motility and anti-ulcer effects;
  • Positive effects on the endocrine (hormone) system;
  • Increased cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure;
  • Anti-fatigue effect;
  • Immune system benefits;
  • Central nervous system (CNS) benefits, including a reduction in sleep time, and simultaneous relaxing and stimulating effects on neural processes;
  • Protection against radiation and delayed aging.

Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus)

Eleuthero, named after its Latin name Eleutherococcus senticosus, has been previously known as Siberian Ginseng. Though many may still refer to Eleuthero as Siberian Ginseng, it is not in fact part of the Ginseng family and it has been renamed to reduce confusion between this herb and those plants part of the "true" Ginseng family of plants (including Chinese Ginseng, American Ginseng, and San Qi).

Eleuthero garnered its name as Siberian Ginseng because of the location where the plant is native to (Northeast Asia) and because of its many herbal similarities as Chinese Ginseng.

Use of Eleuthero date back nearly to the ancients, where it was used to promote general well-being and physical strength, but its modern popularity--including many scientific studies--began in the 1940's in the former USSR. Research into Eleuthero actually gave birth to the word adaptogen and early cosmonauts were prescribed Eleuthero (while American astronauts were prescribed amphetamines).

It is important to note that while Eleuthero (Eleutherococcus senticosus) and the "true" ginsengs share many similarities in their uses and benefits as adaptogens and tonics, they do not share the same chemical make up.

Within the "true" ginseng, the major active constituents are the ginsenosides, but in Eleuthero, the major active class of compounds is the eleutherosides. This makes Eleuthero a very unique addition to our Elephant Mountain Ginseng Formula.

Modern and contemporary research into Eleutherococcus senticosus has revealed a myriad of benefits, including:

  • Stress reduction (through HPA/T regulation);
  • Enhanced mental performance;
  • Enhanced physical performance;
  • Anti-toxin actions;
  • Immune system enhancement, including a reduction of colds and flu;
  • Adjunct, supportive role in cancer treatments.

Some of the research into Eleuthero has shown potential for aiding:

  • HIV infection;
  • Chronic hepatitis;
  • Recovering alcohol addition;
  • Chronic fatigue and immunodeficiency syndrome;
  • Recovering from anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) abuse;
  • Lupus.

Ku Shen (Sophorae Flavescentis)

Unlike the other herbs included in our Elephant Mountain Ginseng Formula, Ku Shen (Sophorae Flavescentis) is not included for its direct tonifying qualities on the Qi, but instead on its ability to clear Heat and dry Dampness, two Chinese medical conditions which are synonymous with many of the complaints our customers mention.

While not an adaptogenic herb, Ku Shen does share in its grouping of herbs referred to as Shen, which speaks to its grouping with tonic herbs.

Within Chinese Medicine, Ku Shen is used primarily to clear Heat and Dampness, including:

  • Drain damp heat;
  • Disperse Wind and stop itching;
  • Clears heat and promotes urination.

Ku Shen, unlike the tonic herbs included in this formula, as not received the same amount of scientific research and application as the other herbs have. Modern pharmacological research has shown several important benefits of Ku Shen, including:

  • Anti-fungal effects against common dermatomycoses (skin fungus);
  • Possible anti-asthma effects (when used in conjunction with other herbs);
  • Anti-viral and liver biochemistry protecting effects in Hepatitis B infection.

Tienchi Ginseng (Panax notoginseng)

The third herb part of the "true" Ginseng trilogy (along with Chinese and American Ginseng), Tienchi ginseng (known as San Qi in Chinese Medicine), has long been used within Chinese Medicine with almost magical medicinal values ascribed to it. Unlike American or Chinese Ginseng, Tienchi Ginseng is unique in that not just the root--but all parts of the plant--are used medicinally.

The Chinese Medicine name of Tienchi Ginseng, San Qi, makes literal reference to Qi. Today, Tienchi Ginseng is often referred to as the "King of Ginsengs" by practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) because Tienchi Ginseng actually contains higher concentrations of the active ginsengosides than Chinese Ginseng does.

Tienchi Ginseng is an important and powerful adaptogen and this is why we have included it is our Elephant Mountain Ginseng Formula.

Classically, Tienchi Ginseng was used to promote blood circulation, to remove blood stasis, reduce inflammation, and to relieve pain. Additionally, Tienchi Ginseng is used within Chinese Medicine to:

  • Stops bleeding and transform Congealed Blood
  • Reduces swelling and alleviates pain.

Classically Tienchi Ginseng was used primarily for its ability to stop bleeding; however, modern research into the herb has highlighted other important actions in the body:

  • Increase the production of red blood cells by promoting the proliferation of multifunctional hematopoietic stem cells
  • Lower blood pressure, reduce heart rate, and relieve a variety of drug-induced arrhythmias;
  • Increased blood flow to the brain;
  • Increased immune system health;
  • Reduced inflammation;
  • Delayed signs of aging;
  • Some anti-tumor effects;
  • Shortened bleeding time.

Good product

Good product. Too bad they only give half of what you pay for. Label claims 43 teaspoon servings. Actually contains only 22 measured teaspoons. I have made two inquiries regarding this problem and they have ignored me. If guess they are completely aware of this issue and either don't care or don't know how to step up to the plate and correct this problem.

Amazing Ginseng-But.

I love this Ginseng. I've been using Sublime for a long time now and recently decided to try Elephant Mtn. Wow what a difference, the Elephant Mtn. is a much better Ginseng product that you can feel the first time you try the stuff. But, I'm not sure what an old leather shoe tastes like this might be close. Please people post what you're mixing this stuff with to help wash it down.
